One secret to help keep your dog living a long healthy life

Water.

In both humans and dogs, as well as all other living organisms, water forms the major part of nearly every body tissue. Naturally, we take water for granted, but without it, life as we know it would cease. For dogs, water is needed to keep their bodies functioning biochemically. Additionally, water is needed to replace the water lost while panting. Unlike humans, who are able to sweat to dissipate heat, dogs must pant to cool down, thereby losing the vital water from their bodies needed to regulate their body temperatures. Humans lose electrolyte-containing products and other body-fluid components through sweating; dogs do not lose anything except water.

Water is essential always, but especially so when the weather is hot or humid or when your dog is exercising or working vigorously. Especially if you life in Florida where the humidity levels average 90-100% on a daily basis, dogs and cats really need an adequate amount of water.

Eyes, Ears, And Teeth

Eyes should be cleaned when there is noticeable discharge or when the dog is being bathed. Check for redness or other signs of irritation. Healthy eyes are bright and clear, and the white of the eye is pure white. You can help keep them that way by gently wiping away discharge in the corners with a cotton ball or soft washcloth moistened with warm water. Avoid rubbing the cotton ball directly over the eye.

Ears should be cleaned at least once a month, more often if your dog is prone to ear problems. Look inside to check for dirt, scratches, parasites, or discharge. Then give them a good sniff! There shouldn’t be any unpleasant odor. Moisten a cotton ball with mineral oil and gently wipe out the ears, going no deeper than the first knuckle on your finger. Breeds with long, hanging ears can be especially prone to ear infections.

Hot Spots

Also referred to as acute moist Dermatitis, a hot spot is a localized area of self-induced trauma that becomes infected. Dogs suffering from atopy are at highest risk, but all dogs can develop these sores. Dog breeds with heavy double coats, like Chow Chows and German Shephard Dogs, seem most prone to developing hot spots immediately prior to shedding, when dead hair may be trapped next to the skin. For unknown reasons, Golden Retrievers tend to develop deeply infected hot spots.

What You Should Know About Fleas & Ticks

Fleas and ticks can be irritating to both you and your dog, but they can be down right dangerous, too. The risks involved vary depending on where you live and how often your dog is exposed to these pests.

Common household fleas don’t usually transmit diseases to pets and people. While there are more than 200 species of fleas in the U.S., the main troublemaker for pets is the cat flea. Happy to feed on anyone in the household-cat, dog, or human-these wingless insects will most likely choose a pet, whose fur provides warm camouflage for their breeding ground.

The Struggle against External Parasites

A parasite is an organism that lives in or on another organism on which it nourishes itself, causing damage to its host while offering nothing in return. Dogs are often tormented by both internal and external parasites. The external parasites to which a dog is prone are fleas, lice, ticks, and mange mites; the internal parasites that attack dogs are so-called worms.

The hair of the dog

Many dog owners think that trimming the coat of a long-haired dog helps it bear warm weather, but this is a dangerous misconception. Each breed has developed the hair quality and density best fit for the environment and climate in which it was bred, and the coat that is characteristic of each breed evolves over many generations before it reaches its present state.

The basic role of hair is to regulate body temperature. In the summer, long hair protects a dog’s skin from direct sunlight and helps lower the skin temperature. In winter, it sustains body heat. These functions would be lost if a long-haired dog were trimmed.

Good Dental Hygiene can save Dogs & Cats from Periodontal Disease

Dental disease is one of the most common diagnoses veterinarians make.  In fact, periodontal disease is the No. 1 disease in adult dogs and cats: 85% show signs of it by the time they’re 4 years old.

Untreated oral disease can spread to major organs, including the kidneys, liver and heart, and seriously affect a pet’s health.  But, like in humans, a little prevention goes a long way.

So you want to brush your dog, but what brush should you use?

So you just came from the dog groomers and your dog is now looking like a hairless rat because he/she had to be shaved due to too much matting. Mats are doggy knots basically, but if left unattended they can create a big huge mess for your dog causing them to be shaved or cut shorter than you wish. Mats doesn’t only affect how your dog will be groomed, but they also pose potential health issues and can be quite painful as well.

If a groomer decided that your dog needs to be shaved, and you think its just the groomer taking the easy way out, its actually the opposite. Shaving a matted dog is very difficult for the groomer and requires more time and can cause irritation to the dog. As annoying as mats are and as painful as it can be seeing your dog naked, this is all completely preventable with daily brushing.
